Writing Tips - Learn How to Write a Business Letter TutorGiant.com When writing a business letter, students should realize that it is similar to writing a friendly letter. Students should consider who their audience is, what is their reason for writing the letter and what exactly do they want to say. A business letter does differ from a friendly letter. Students should not the following differences when writing a business letter as opposed to a friendly letter. · The greeting has a colon (:) in a business letter as opposed to a comma in a friendly letter. · Business letters contain the writer’s address and an ‘inside address’ which is the address of the person to whom the letter is being written. · The closing of the business letter is not as casual as a friendly letter. In a friendly letter, we usually write “Love’, or “Your Friend”. In a business letter, the closing is more formal. We usually write, “Sincerely” or “Yours Truly”. · In a business letter, we put in two signatures. First, we place a handwritten signature and then a typed signature.
