TutorGiant.com

When writing a business letter, students should realize that it is similar to writing a friendly letter.  Students should consider who their audience is, what is their reason for writing the letter and what exactly do they want to say.

A business letter does differ from a friendly letter.  Students should not the following differences when writing a business letter as opposed to a friendly letter.

·         The greeting has a colon (:) in a business letter as opposed to a comma in a friendly letter.

·         Business letters contain the writer’s address and an ‘inside address’ which is the address of the person to whom the letter is being written.

·        The closing of the business letter is not as casual as a friendly letter.  In a friendly letter, we usually write “Love’, or “Your Friend”.  In a business letter, the closing is more formal.  We usually write, “Sincerely” or “Yours Truly”.

·         In a business letter, we put in two signatures.  First, we place a handwritten signature and then a typed signature.

For a better understanding of how to compose a business letter, see the ‘Writing a Business Letter’ video in the Writing section of Tutorgiant’s video library.
