Behaviour - My Child is Not Following Directions in Class

     It is extremely frustrating to have your child need reminders because he/she is not following directions.  Sometimes, it seems as if they are choosing not to pay attention. Yet they seem to be able to pick up any conversation in the room while they are doing something else!

     If your child needs reminders because he/she is not following directions, there are many steps you can take at home to correct this behavior.

·        Create a home ‘rule’ whereby everyone does as they’re asked the first time with having reminders.  Reinforce this rule and be consistent so that it becomes habitual.  Your child might be more prone to following this rule if he/she sees a sibling doing so.

·        You can even reward your child for doing what he/she is supposed to do without having a reminder.

·        Be a good role model.  Model for your child how to do a chore around the house without being asked more than once.

·         If your child is asked to do something and a reminder is required, sit down with him/her and discuss what had just happened.  Tell him/her that you just made a request and it was not followed.  Have your child express why it was not followed (e.g. I was distracted by …) and how he/she will do a better job next time.

·         Make sure your child is paying attention to you when you make a request.  Focus on eye contact and check that he/she heard you clearly.

·         Don’t ask too many requests at one time nor make a request with many steps.  Your child may tune out, get confused, or become easily distracted.

   It is important to make sure that you don’t criticize nor punish your child for needing reminders and not following directions.  The worst thing we can do is make our children feel bad for something that they need to improve.  Be supportive, consistent, and patient and you will see results.
