Writing Skills – How do I Write a Paragraph? TutorGiant.com It’s interesting to speak to students about writing a paragraph because most students think that it’s just a matter of putting sentences together and indenting. Well, they are partially correct. Writing a paragraph involves more than just indenting five spaces and stringing sentences together. A paragraph is a group of sentences that are all about the same topic. In order to correctly write a paragraph, students must have the following: 1. The first line of the paragraph is indented (5 spaces). 2. A paragraph’s main idea is usually located in the topic sentence. 3. The topic sentence is usually the first or last sentence in the paragraph. 4. The body of the paragraph must have sentences. These sentences tell about and support the paragraph’s topic. 5. The writer must consider the audience for which they are writing. Students should check over their paragraphs to make sure that they have included all the appropriate elements of a paragraph. They can ask themselves the following: · Is the main idea in my topic sentence? · Do my sentences support my main idea? · Do my sentences have the correct conventions (i.e. grammar, spelling, etc...)? · Is my writing: age, grade, and concept appropriate for my audience? · Did I indent the first sentence? It is important for students to be aware of the structure of a paragraph (you can find these lessons in Tutorgiant) in order to be able to write their own correct paragraphs. ©Tutorgiant.com
