Special Education - Visual Perception Difficulties

TutorGiant.com

Before reading on, make sure that you have taken your child to your health care professional.  You should have your child’s vision checked regularly.

I am a teacher, not an optometrist, but I can give you some tips in order to help your child’s visual perception.  Again, seek professional advice before trying any of the following tips:

·        Have your child sort objects according to color, shape, and size.

·         Allow your child to practice a wide variety of art activities.  Tracing, cutting, coloring and pasting all require visual perception skills.

·        Have your child find color and shape patterns throughout the house, in books, and in the community.

·        Take your child to the park or enroll him/her in a gymnastics program when you can.  Your child will become more aware of his/her body position and space.

·         Purchase (or go to the library) “I Spy” books.  These books are fantastic for students with visual perception difficulties!  These books are filled with colorful objects from every genre and theme.

·         Have your child practice writing or printing words and numbers on a regular basis.  This will help both visual perception and eye hand coordination.

If you are concerned with your child’s visual perception skills, speak to your child’s teacher or seek professional help.
