Geometry Skills – Learning Geometry Outside School TutorGiant.com You can’t help escape the geometric shapes that surround our lives. From our homes to the stores and in every structure, geometric shapes are everywhere. Your child can easily take an interest in geometry (or at least you can help them develop an interest) when he notices that he can find shapes in this bedroom and throughout his home and community. Show your child the importance of geometry by teaching him/her that geometry is and will be part of his/her live. · Point out geometric shapes in your house (e.g. rectangular doors, square shelves, circular clocks, etc…). · When reading books or driving in the car, show your child that structures (e.g. buildings, houses, bridges…) are a combination of different sized geometric shapes. · Make geometry interesting by teaching your child about ancient structures (e.g. Roman arches, Egyptian pyramids,). · You can point out octagonal stop signs, perpendicular intersections, parallel streets, rectangular traffic lights with a pattern of circles (i.e. lights) inside them. Make your child realize that geometry is part of his/her life! · You can teach your child about angles through sports (i.e. how hockey, soccer, and billiard players shoot from different angles). · Point out geometric patterns to your child. For example, bricks and tiles form patterns. Some types of linen have geometric patterns as well. Once your child develops an interest in geometry, and can make personal connections to shapes, his/her classroom work will become more interesting and meaningful. |
