Conversion Sheet – Converting Units Reference Sheet

     You can help your child convert units of measurement at home.  First, explain to your child how the smaller units make up the larger ones.  Your child can use a calculator to convert units of measurement.  The beauty of the metric system is that it enables you to multiply or divide units by 10 in order to make conversions (see lesson in Tutorgiant).

Metric Conversions

(Note: U.S. spelling – meter…Canadian spelling – metre)

All metric spellings must end in ‘re’ for Canadian citizens

1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm)

1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters = 1000 millimeters

1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters

1 gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg)

1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams

1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) = 100 centiliters (cL)

1 kiloliter (kL) = 1000 liters = 1 000 000 milliliters

Standard Unit Conversions

1 cup (c) = 8 fluid ounces (fl oz)

1 pint (pt) = 2 cups = 16 fluid ounces

1 quart (gt) = 2 pints = 32 fluid ounces

1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts = 128 fluid ounces

 1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in)

1 yard (yd) = 3 feet = 36 inches

1 mile (mi) = 1760 yards = 5280 feet

1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz)

1 ton = 2000 pounds
