My Child Doesn’t Interact with Peers TutorGiant.com There are fewer things that sadden me more than seeing a child alone in the schoolyard with no one to play with. As a teacher and parent it’s heart- wrenching. There are ways you can help. 1. Be proactive with your family’s social life. Make plans with other families who have kids. Immerse your child as often as you can (without over socializing your child of course) in social settings. Give your child opportunities to interact with peers in a constructive and fun way. 2. Get your child involved in extra-curricular activities. 3. Explain to your child the importance of social interaction. 4. Reduce any emphasis on competition. Your child needs to feel good about his ‘self’. Focus on self-improvement rather than competition. 5. Invite your child’s classroom friends over to your home. Help your child to develop meaningful relationships with the people he sees on a daily basis. 6. Explore reasons why your child chooses not to interact with others. Is it a lack of self-confidence or a genuine disinterest? See your health care professional if you have serious concerns. 7. Encourage, don’t force your child to interact with peers. 8. Find an activity or skill that your child is good at and that makes him/her feel good about himself/herself. (I think Martial Arts is great for kids, especially boys). Try your best to encourage your child to play with others. Expose your child to other kids often and most of all, be a good role model. Show your child how you interact with your friends. ©Tutorgiant.com |
