Social Skills – My Child is Not Accepted by Peers

TutorGiant.com

Quite often, children who are not accepted by peers also have difficulty with their studies.

If your child is not accepted by his or her peers, it may be due to some of your child’s behaviours , or perhaps the other children are not the types of kids you would want your child to socialize with.

You can help your child become more accepted by his or her peers (granted the peers are worth the trouble).

·         Don’t force your child to interact with others with whom your child doesn’t feel comfortable with.

·         Encourage your child to participate in extra curricular activities.

·         Enroll your child in programs outside of school.  Give your child the opportunity to socialize and develop friendships outside the school setting.  It may turn out that your child and his/her school peers don’t have as much in common as your child will have with peers outside of school.

·         Probe into the reasons as to why your child is not accepted.  Don’t instantly assume that it’s everyone else who is the problem (denial isn’t just a river in Egypt).  It may be hard to swallow, but maybe your child is lacking in a certain area of social skills.  Don’t let it affect your ego.  Do what’s best for your child.  Find out the real reason and fix it.

·         Be a good role model.  Model appropriate social behaviour for your child.

·         Have your child invite a friend from school over for a play date.  Show your child’s friend the time of his/her life.  Make the experience fun for all (don’t over do it!).  Give other kids the chance to see how wonderful your child is.  Repeat this with the same friend and then invite other kids over.  You will be taking the initiative to help your child develop friendships.

Do what you can in order to initiate your child’s social interaction.  Boost your child’s confidence and be supportive so that your child can improve his or her social skills.
